Whether an apartment for a night, a castle for a week, or a villa for a month, Airbnb connects people to unique travel experiences, at any price point, in more than 33,000 cities and 192 countries.”

Recently stayed in Philippines in Metro Manila apartment, thought I’d add a direct link to that one as well.

Called the “ebay for space” by Time magazine, Airbnb is a cool new way to travel – allowing you to rent  rooms or entire apartments/houses in cities all around the world, getting you out of boring hotels and into neighbourhoods where the locals live.  Listings range from the norm such as holiday rentals, private rooms, entire apartments, bed and breakfasts and hotels, to the awesome such as castles and treehouses.

According to the minds behind Airbnb, the idea for this new way to find accommodation and travel first came about when the Co-founder Joe Gebbia let three strangers stay on air mattresses in his San Francisco apartment during an over crowded design conference in 2007. After that Gebbia says that “people sent us resumes to say they really want to stay at the ‘Air Bed and Breakfast,’ to give a sense of how desperate it was”, and the business took off from there.

Now Airbnb is expanding throughout the Globe – you can book accommodation anywhere from Boston to London, to Rio de Janeiro. And it’s all quite simple. All you have to do is search the available listings on the website, send through a request for the dates that you would like to stay. This request will be sent to the owner of the property who has created the listing, and once they have approved your request details about the address and conditions of stay will be sent through to you.

The website is reputation based, meaning that each property is review by other travellers who have previously stayed there, to ensure that you are not swindled out of money or endangered in any way.
