If you have a smartphone, you may have heard of the app ‘Shazam’ before. Well, Midomi is like Shazam – only better.

Unlike Shazam, which requires a song to be played into the speaker of your phone so that the app can identify it, Midomi goes one step further. If you can carry a decent tune by humming, whistling or even singing, then you’ll be able to find out what the name of the song is that’s been stuck in your head since hearing it on the radio yesterday!

Using the company’s ‘Sound2Sound’ technology, the website can match even the most poorly-hummed performances to the professional recordings. The unique thing about Midomi, unlike shazam or Pandora Radio, is that is also allows you connect with other people who share similar music tastes on the site. Not only will you find the song you’re looking for but you can also find an online community of people who appreciate the same sounds as you.

Midomi has further pushed this idea of community through its other features. Not only can you search for music, you can also contribute your own original songs or covers. For all those undiscovered wannabes out there this creates an ideal platform – whenever someone searches the latest hit from Lady Gaga your cover might be on the first page.

Midomi claims that its mission is “to build the most comprehensive database of searchable music” and this is also reflected in its other features. It has an extensive digital music store where you can buy original tracks or listen to samples.

Probably the best thing this dLooker noticed about the site was how multicultural it is. English language/US pop stars definitely aren’t the only ones that dominate its pages and you can search music in nearly 50 languages!!

It should also be noted that the Smartphone version of Midomi (which is made and owned by the same people) is called ‘SoundHound’. A newer and sleeker version of Midomi, SoundHound goes one step further than Midomi allowing users to get lyrics, watch music videos on YouTube, launch Pandora Radio, as well as providing links to iTunes and ringtones. It will also recommend similar songs or artists.
